"Our primary focus is addressing pressing socio-economic challenges and governance issues that continue impacting communities..."
History

The Thulani Dlomo Foundation, herein referred to as The T.D Foundation, was registered on the 20th of January 2025, inspired by a vision Ambassador Thulani Dlomo divinely received in 2020. His vision was first documented in his book "The Encounter", and it became the blueprint for transformative action. After in-depth discussions and reflections with his wife, academics and friends, the Foundation was established as a cornerstone for fostering economic growth and empowering youth. We believe in the transformative power of education. By equipping young people with critical skills to navigate school, work, and social relationships effectively, the Foundation creates opportunities that contribute to individual success and broader societal progress.

The T.D Foundation is a South African civil society organisation dedicated to driving meaningful and sustainable change. We go beyond providing grants by offering capacity-building services to civil society organisations, empowering them to enhance their effectiveness in engaging citizens in development programmes.

Our primary focus is addressing pressing socio-economic challenges and governance issues that continue impacting communities. Through collaboration, innovation, and strategic action, we aim to be a catalyst for positive change and work toward a better future for all.

The youth of Africa are at a critical juncture. With South Africa's alarming youth unemployment rate of 60.2% among job seekers aged 15 to 24 (Statistics South Africa, 2024), South Africa faces mounting socio-economic challenges. Former South African President Thabo Mbeki cautioned that if issues such as poverty, poor governance, and lawlessness remain unaddressed, South Africa risks experiencing its own version of the Arab Spring, an outcome that no one can afford.

This urgency was underscored in July 2021, when civil unrest in South Africa led to losses exceeding R70 billion nationally, devastating communities and businesses alike (Erasmus, 2022). These realities emphasise the need for immediate, collective action to address the root cause of poverty, unemployment, and inequality.

The T.D Foundation is taking bold steps to illuminate the challenges and address them from grassroots heads-on. We are committed to empowering South Africa's youth through targeted initiatives that drive sustainable development, reduce poverty, and foster social responsibility and stability.

Our core programmes include
01
DRIVING RESEARCH
AND INNOVATION

by supporting evidence-based initiatives, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and driving meaningful impact in the field of research, data collection, and analysis. The T.D Foundation employs research and data analysis as tools to gain insights into the causes and effects of poverty, unemployment, and inequality. Research and data analysis assists the T.D Foundation to analyze data on education, job opportunities, and access to health care, making it easy for the T.D Foundation to direct organizations to identify the challenges facing the young people and develop strategies to address them. By analyzing data on the impact of programs and initiatives, the T.D Foundation can identify which strategies are working and which strategies are not and make adjustments required. This, in addition, can assist organizations collaborating with the T.D Foundation to optimize their efforts and make sure that they are reaching the intended audience.
